Poll: How about a subcategory for Preps ?

From time to time, in general discussion, we get into areas of 'preparation'.....I know this is primarily a metals related board, but also feel that folks into metals are of the same mindset as folks into general preparation in other areas of life, such as foods, water, etc.....

See as how we have a couple of sub categories now under the General Disscussion, if there is enough interest in this, how about another sub cat called "General Preps" or something along that line.

I've got a bunch of little 'nuggets' (hehe) I'd put in there, and I know other do as well....if ya'll think we are getting TOO off course with this....which is why I'm suggesting a sub-cat........that way if you don't want browse it, don't.

IF enough want it, maybe TPTB here will consider this ?

Thanks

I'll face it, I have been against every SUB-forum since we started. I like mixers. I am a uniter, not a divider.

Voted yes. I was thinking some on this as I read the recent food distributor posts. It's simply a way to organize and quick referral.

Ponce's thread is great, maybe it could be moved there to kick off the sub forum category.

I did retrieve some of the info you posted. Should have at least acknowleged it, so you'd know your work was well received.

btw, Good call Andy.

Actually, you started 37 threads in the last 24 hours, and I didn't see any of them ( maybe I missed one ? ) that I'd call a "prep" type thread.

Don't get me wrong, I enjoy a lot of what you bring here, which is about 90% articles from other sources, which is fine as I may not have had time to fine them myself.......but don't complain if some of your threads don't get responses just do to sheer volume.

I use the post count to figure out what tidbits that I read that would be enjoyed here.

Yep.....THERE ya go !

No, actually I didn't read it.....didn't think I had time to get into something that long....

But now you've got me curious......

Re: Poll: How about a subcategory for Preps ?

Great idea. Anything we can do as a group to help each other be more prepared for anything that can be thrown at us is a positive thing.

Think "Katrina". The number one problem was lack of preparedness. 10 minutes after the grid went down and they went into a SHTF situation(that's what it was for them, if only on a limited geographical basis), there were people begging for help, then screaming that they were not getting any help. There is absolutely no excuse in this day and age for not being able to last a week or two without outside assistance.

A subcategory for exchange of ideas is a great idea. If you don't want to see it, filter it out. :clap2:

I like the generalness of the general forum but this is a good idea. Lots of reasons to go into a forum like that and get info.

I think it's helpful.

Re: Poll: How about a subcategory for Preps ?

I went to a feed store around my area and all they had that i woudl consider food im mildly troublesome times was barley and corn. That corn i do not think would buy as i could guess it is gmo. but then again we are in amerika are we not, and the barley looked ok. I wanted to get oats in bulk as that is what i eat for breakfast. and 50 lbs bag would last a while

BTW does anyone know of large, cheap, airtight and food grade (preferably hdpe) containers?

and where to get em?

Re: Poll: How about a subcategory for Preps ?

Zhukher,

I'd check pretty thoroughly before I started eating feed grade grains. A lot of that stuff is "treated" with all kinds of junk. Some of it contains bacterium, toxins, etc., which are at 'acceptable' levels for some animals, but not others. I chew a few oats from time to time, but I really wouldn't want to make a diet out of that stuff. Maybe you can find some organic? Although a lot of organic is a scam, too.

Your local beer and wine making store will have 6 gallon food grade buckets with extremely tight fitting lids. You will have to ask them if you can get a lid that does not have a hole drilled in it as they are predrilled to accept an airlock for use in the fermenting process. They're twelve bucks at my local store, but I see they're about ten before shipping at this site:

http://morebeer.com/browse.html?cate...yword=&x=1&y=1

As for the subforum, I could go either way.

Re: Poll: How about a subcategory for Preps ?

What to barter with....... bullets? coffee? sugar? salt? cooking oil?.....while they are good and needed the main one will be toilet paper.

I know this from my experience in Cuba, as you know there is almost NOTHING in Cuba so that they are very carefull in what they buy and own and a place where to have a bottle of aspirin makes you a doctor.

I wrote at one time the many uses of toilet paper like for bandages, writing paper, plug holes in wall, wipe stuff off and on and on.....

Buy tabacco and coffee in bulk and sell or trade by by weight, place your goods in a airtight five gallon bucket and suck the air out and check it out once in a while by tapping on the bucket you can tell if it is still in a vacuum and also the lid will tell you if there is stilll a vacuum inside.

Don't keep or trade liquor, you don't want a drunken fool to come after you and you dont want your own bullets sent back to you by air mail.

Hold for as long as possible on cooking oil and powder milk (shelf life)

Because you don't know how long the situation will last try to keep ALL THAT YOU HAVE specially bullets and toilet paper,,,,,remember that the situation in Cuba have lasted for over forty years.

Yes, I think that we should have a thread for survival.

Z, I find 50# bags of oats at Amish run bulk food stores. I'm sure there most be places you can find that will order them in for you.

I like the 5-6 gallon food grade buckets. You should be able to find them online, I just don't know any source with out doing a search, as I have several and also bought the replacement lids that screw on. Restaurants would be a good place to start to find free buckets, if the help don't latch on to them all.

Texan, i have found same food grade plastic buckets for about 4.50 which is good, they are not airtight though. and the white ones are not 100% surely made from hdpe. so the brewers buckets i woudl consider to be expensive

on the same note.

Anytime you have an adjective in front of an item in question you bet your a$$ someone is making money. some adjectives are cheaper than others

Wedding cake = $250 while Cake = 50
Baby gate = 150 while dog gate = 80
brewers bucket = 7.50 while usplastic hdpe food grade bucket is 4.50
